Hotel Rumford, est. 1888 · the oldest business in the River Valley
What "Hotel Rumford" means in this town.
Hotel Rumford opened its doors in 1888, when the paper mills were turning this bend in the Androscoggin into one of Maine's great mill towns. It has stood on the downtown business island ever since — through boom years and lean ones, always with the lights on and a stool open at the bar.
For generations it has been the town's living room. Mill workers and travelers filled its rooms; neighbors met over supper; the whole River Valley marked its wins and losses at these tables. The original hardwood floors, refinished under a dozen coats of varnish, still carry the wear of 135 years of good company.
That is what "Hotel Rumford" means here. Not just the oldest hotel in town — a blue-collar landmark that has always belonged to the people who live and work in the shadow of the mill. Under new ownership, we are keeping it exactly that: rustic, warm, and open late, the way it has always been.
